Abstract:

This study explores the role of deliberate practice in ethics training for psychology undergraduates. Ethics education is emphasized in both undergraduate psychology programs and the training of health service psychologists. As competence-based education gains importance, skill-based training is needed beyond traditional instruction. The study compared deliberate practice with case discussion and motivational interviewing for training 63 novice undergraduates in handling ethical situations in therapy. Results showed that students in the deliberate practice group improved in responding to simulated clients, whereas those in the control groups did not. This suggests that focused, applied ethics training can be effective early in a student’s education.
