“Leading by Faith: One by One"

Competition Prompt: 

Step 1: Take time to study the Christ-Centered Leadership Model (found at sorensencenter.byu.edu) and consider how principles of love, agency, and accountability can be used to cultivate our relationships with and responsibilities to God, His children, self, and our stewardships.

Step 2: Write a 1,500 to 1,700-word personal essay in response to the following prompt.

Theme: "Leading by Faith: One by One"
• How does the Christ-Centered Leadership Model invite us to serve one-by-one? Write about an experience in which you ministered to the one, or when you were "the one." What did it teach you about your role as a leader in your family, congregation, class, or community?

Guidelines:

Eligibility: The contest is open to enrolled full-time, undergraduate students of Brigham Young University.

Submission Deadline: Essays must be submitted through the Qualtrics submission form in a PDF or Word doc format by Friday, October 11, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.

Judging Criteria: Essays will be evaluated on their thoughtful engagement with the Christ-Centered Leader Model and their grounding in personal experience.

Prizes: Monetary prizes: $1000, $850, and $700 for 1st-3rd places respectively.

Selection Process: A panel of judges will curate entries. Essay winners will be notified via email or phone by November 1.

Recognition of Essay Contest Winners: Selected essays will be included in the Expo Hall (Located in the Wilkinson Garden Court) during the Leading by Faith Conference on Friday, November 15, 2024. Winners will also be invited to participate in the Leading by Faith Conference where they will be recognized for their work. More information as to when during the conference the recognition of winners will take place is TBA.

Copyright and Usage Rights: By submitting an essay to the Leading by Faith Essay Contest, students grant Brigham Young University the right to use their essay for promotion and publication related to the competition (which may include being featured on the Sorensen Center's website and in the center's annual report). Students retain all other rights to their work, including reproduction and commercial use, outside of this agreement. Brigham Young University agrees not to use the essay for any other purpose without explicit permission from the student. Submission implies acceptance of these terms. Brigham Young University reserves the right to not publish or feature essays that do not align with the purpose of the essay contest.

Code of Conduct: Students submitting to the Brigham Young University Essay Contest must ensure their work is original and aligned with the competition theme. Professionalism is expected throughout the submission process, including timely communication and adherence to guidelines. Compliance with all laws and regulations, including copyright, is mandatory. Students must conduct themselves ethically and accept the decisions of the organizers and judges.
