Tyler Schultz: Leadership Lessons from the Theranos Whistleblower

The Sorensen Center had the wonderful opportunity to hear from Tyler Shultz as he spoke to students about his ethical obligation to unveil the truth and the courage it took to do so.

Who is Tyler Schultz?

Tyler was 22 years old, fresh out of college, and eager to join a company that was being touted as "the apple of healthcare." He quickly realized, however, that behind the façade of a charismatic founder, powerful board, high profile investors, and magazine cover stories, Theranos was built on lies.

Theranos promised to revolutionize the healthcare industry through cutting-edge blood tests that were so efficient and compact, it could be done "inside helicopters." Theranos raised nearly $1B in funding, attained a $9B valuation, and assembled a high-powered board of directors of former secretaries of state, secretaries of defense, 4-star generals, and senators. However, unbeknownst to its shareholders, Theranos lied about the products it was producing and became one of the biggest corporate frauds since Enron.

In this event, Tyler Shultz shared his experiences navigating complex ethical, regulatory, legal, and personal dilemmas exposing Theranos as the sham that it was.
