Juneteenth is a commemoration of the emancipation of slaves in post-civil war America. But rather than a time of jovial celebration like Independence Day, Juneteenth remains a bittersweet and reflective day for African Americans for multiple reasons. The word acknowledge means “to accept or admit the existence or truth of something” (Oxford English Dictionary). An important part of acknowledging Juneteenth and contributing to a beloved community includes taking time for personal reflection - examining the way you view the people and the world around you. When each of us come together as a community to understand the past, we become better equipped to unite in shaping our future. As you continue to learn about Juneteenth, take time to acknowledge how these events impact your experience and the experiences of Black Americans around you. By choosing to acknowledge this important history, you are choosing to be more like Jesus Christ by “[leading] out in treating people of all races and religions and any other groups with love, respect, and inclusion” (For the Strength of Youth; Love God, Love your Neighbor).
